The GA Way
Being a family of farmers means we’ve always felt a strong responsibility not only to the animals we feed, but to the land, the environment and the communities around us.
The GA Way
Being a family of farmers means we’ve always felt a strong responsibility not only to the animals we feed, but to the land, the environment and the communities around us.
Caring for the world around us
At GA Pet Food, we’ve always believed our responsibility goes beyond making pet food.
The Bracewell family has farmed the land since 1972, and that heritage shapes how we think about everything we do. It’s about looking after the land properly, caring for the animals we feed, and supporting the communities around us.
To guide this, we’ve set out ten core environmental pledges, and these principles guide how we operate every day.
Pledge No. 1
Future Generations
Doing things the right way, for the long term
GA will seek to meet the needs of the present by minimising our impact on the environment, so as not to compromise the ability of future generations.
Pledge No. 2
Not To Pollute
Reducing our impact on the world around us
We will minimise, and strive to eliminate, the release of any pollutant that may cause harm to our land, water, air or the health of our neighbours.
Pledge No. 3
Sustainable use of resources
Doing things the right way, for the long term
We will make sustainable use of all renewable natural resources, including the water that falls on our site, organic waste produced within our on-site processes, the soils of our farms and the natural raw materials we use in our products.
Pledge No. 4
Disposal of Waste
Reducing waste wherever we can
We will minimise the creation of waste and, wherever possible, reduce, reuse, recycle and recover materials, seeking to prevent any waste going to landfill.
Pledge No. 5
Efficient Use of Energy
Moving towards cleaner, more efficient energy
We will make every effort, and invest, to use environmentally safe and sustainable energy sources as we move towards a carbon-free energy future.
We will reduce, recover and reuse all available energy, maximising the efficiency and conservation of energy across our operations.
Pledge No. 6
Health of Our Colleagues and Our Communities
Looking after our people and our neighbours
We will minimise environmental health and safety risks to our colleagues and the local communities in which we operate, reducing disturbance from noise, odour, dust or light.
Pledge No. 7
Safety Of Our Products
Making sure every product is safe and trusted
We will ensure that all the products we sell are safe for both pet owners and the pets that consume them.
Pledge No. 8
Performance and Audit
Holding ourselves accountable
We will conduct and publish an annual self-evaluation of our progress in implementing these pledges, reporting on our environmental performance in terms of energy usage, water and waste recovery, and ensuring compliance with planning permissions and environmental permits governing our sites.
Pledge No. 9
Communication
Working together to make progress
All at GA will work collectively across all departments and with our Partner Brands to ensure that our Pledges are achieved step by step. We will set targets that we can work at together. We will inform our Partner Brands and colleagues of our progress and how we can continue working towards a sustainable future.
Pledge No. 10
Perfection
Always improving, never standing still
Perfection may not be possible, but meaningful progress is.
Together, GA and its Partner Brands can make a difference and help ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
Putting our pledges into practice
Working together for a better future
The Asland Walks Energy Park is a long-term partnership between GA Pet Food, Bretherton Parish Council and the local community.
Together, we are working towards a shared goal of reducing environmental impact while creating lasting benefits for the area.
The project brings together renewable energy generation, habitat creation and community benefit. It includes a wind turbine, solar panels and battery storage, alongside the development of a large habitat bank for wildlife and new areas for people to engage with the landscape.
Improving the air quality all around
To reduce odours in and around the site, particularly for our neighbours, we've invested in five bio-beds.
We’ve invested in a system that naturally filters the air across our site before it’s released back into the environment.
Using large bio-beds, air is passed through organic material that helps remove odours and improve air quality for our neighbours.
Working with nature, not against it
It's not just pets that love the smell of our pet food
Our pet food smells as good as it tastes, so we work with skilled falconers who use trained birds of prey to gently deter pest species such as gulls who are attracted to the site.
It’s a natural, effective approach that reflects how we prefer to manage our environment.
Caring for the land around us
From bird and bat boxes to 50,000 trees and wetland habitats around Plocks Farm.
The land around Plocks Farm is home to more than our site. It is part of the wider landscape of Bretherton, with fields, trees, wetlands and wildlife all around us.
We continue to improve these natural spaces by planting trees, installing bird and bat boxes, and caring for wetland habitats around the River Douglas and Asland Walks.
These small acts of stewardship help support biodiversity close to home, creating places where wildlife can nest, feed and thrive.
Look closely at the image from Asland Walks and you may even spot a family of swans, with their cygnets making themselves at home.
Waste nothing
Making better use of everything we have
This principle sits at the heart of how we operate.
We’ve invested in our own on-site recycling facility, where materials such as cardboard, plastic, metal and paper are carefully separated and processed.
Today, 98% of all waste generated on-site is recycled, and we continue to work towards our goal of 100%.
Inspiring the next generation
We work closely with schools, colleges and universities, regularly welcoming students to our facilities.
Through hands-on, engaging experiences, they gain a deeper understanding of how we create the world’s finest pet food, while exploring the opportunities a future with GA could offer.
